Not every big performance results in a headline victory. Sometimes it is the subtle runs, the late headway, the eye-catching move through the field, or the effort despite unfavourable conditions, that signal a horse ready to strike next time. Here are four runners who caught the eye this week and may be worth adding to your tracker for future races...

ROMAN DRAGON

Roman Dragon once again did himself proud at Chester yesterday, posting another excellent performance to finish second in a competitive handicap. The result may not have been another victory, but there was plenty to admire about the way the seven-year-old went about his business. He travelled with his customary enthusiasm, handled the unique demands of the Roodee beautifully and kept finding plenty when the pressure was applied in the closing stages. To finish runner-up in a competitive Class 3 contest is a credit to the horse, particularly given he was top weight and was putting his excellent record at Chester on the line. He continues to show remarkable consistency and, most importantly, a genuine appetite for racing in his veteran years.

YOUDECIDE

Youdecide may have seen his winning run come to an end at Worcester yesterday, but there was absolutely no disgrace in another highly creditable performance from Ben Pauling’s progressive six-year-old. Sent off the 11/8 favourite after two hugely impressive victories, Ben Pauling’s gelding travelled with his usual enthusiasm and showed plenty of determination when asked to stretch the field. He disputed the lead three fences from home and, although headed after the last by the more experienced Crebilly, he kept on gamely to secure second, beaten just 2½ lengths. It was a performance that confirmed he belongs in this company. It was a steep increase in class against experienced rivals and he had to carry a 7lb higher mark from his latest success. Rather than a setback, this looks another important step forward for a horse who continues to progress and has plenty more to offer.

WAY MAKER

Way Maker was another horse who caught the eye on Wednesday, and while he had to settle for second, there was certainly plenty to like about his run. He travelled really well through the race and looked to be enjoying himself, jumping with plenty of enthusiasm and showing a willing attitude when it mattered. He was right there in the mix turning for home and, although Datstheholyallofit was able to get the better of him, Way Maker kept battling all the way to the line. Sometimes a second-place finish can tell you plenty about a horse, and this felt like one of those occasions. He showed plenty of ability, stayed on strongly and gave the impression that there is certainly more to come.

BEYLERBEYI

Beylerbeyi produced a terrific performance at Doncaster yesterday, finishing second in the Group 2 Doncaster Cup and once again showing what a classy staying horse he is. This was a serious test, over 2m2f and against some highly regarded stayers, so to come out of it as runner-up is something to be hugely proud of. He travelled strongly for Clifford Lee, settled into the race nicely and showed his trademark staying power when it really mattered. What makes the effort even more pleasing is the progression he has shown recently. After a solid fifth in the Ebor, he stepped up in grade and looked completely at home in Group company. He may not have quite managed to get his head in front today, but he certainly enhanced his reputation.
