What World Pool is, how it can offer better value for punters, and create a more sustainable racing industry.
World Pool is a global betting pool, run by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, that combines bets from around the world into a single pool on selected major race days. Instead of betting against a bookmaker at fixed odds, you’re betting into a shared pool, with dividends calculated based on total stakes.
Why is that important? Scale. With far more money in the system, World Pool can often return better value than the Starting Price, particularly in exotic bets like Exactas and Trifectas.
The numbers back that up. Across the 2025 UK World Pool season, World Pool beat SP on 67% of all runners, while 47% of winners returned higher dividends than SP. On last year’s 2000 Guineas card, World Pool outperformed SP on 61% of runners, with multiple races paying significantly more, including the Guineas itself.
It’s not just win bets either. Exotic pools are where the real difference can be seen, with Exactas and Trifectas regularly outperforming their traditional equivalents.
The importance of World Pool goes beyond betting. It is becoming an increasingly significant revenue stream for racing, with the expanded 2026 schedule expected to generate £3.5–4 million for racecourses, with many reinvesting directly into prize money.
In short, it’s one of the few areas in racing that is actively growing, benefiting punters, racecourses and participants alike.
