Henderson's Highs And Lows

There are weeks in racing that feel routine. And then there are weeks like this one at Seven Barrows. For Nicky Henderson, it was a reminder of everything the sport gives and everything it takes away, often within the same breath. On the track, brilliance. Off it, heartbreak.

Constitution Hill: Brilliance without boundaries

Constitution Hill does not deal in normal expectations. Throughout his career, he has constantly rewritten what we believed was possible. It was always thought that his jumping was his greatest asset, but when that strength became his weakness, many thought the nine-year-old's career would be over. The horse had other ideas.

The 2023 Champion Hurdler, has now gone two-from-two on the Flat, and looks deserving of his chance to step into Group class next month at Newbury in the John Porter Stakes. Conventional wisdom says he should not be able to do the things we have seen from him in his two Flat starts so far. Yet, we really should have expected the unexpected from this enigmatic character who has captured the imagination of so many.

His inability to jump was not the first obstacle he has overcome in his career. He has battled back from several injuries and seemingly managed to scale the heights he reached previously. During those times on the sidelines, he twice had a deputy stand in for him who was more than up to the task. That deputy was Sir Gino.

.

Sir Gino: Promise unfulfilled

Where Constitution Hill represents perfection realised, Sir Gino was still in the process of becoming. The parallels are impossible to ignore but sadly the contrast has now become so stark.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Sir Gino had lost his battle with the infection he picked up while recovering from fracturing his pelvis at Cheltenham in January.

Raw talent, pace, scope. Sir Gino checked every box for what the ultimate equine athlete looks like. There have been few, if any, chase debuts as impressive as the display he put up at Christmas last year. Just like Constitution Hill, such was the talent of the horse, that he was equally as good in a different discipline, winning the Christmas Hurdle this year in phenomenal style.

The horse who was Constitution Hill's shadow in so many ways was primed to become the next star shining the light for National Hunt racing. Sadly, that void will remain for now.

The same yard, the same week

That these two stories unfolded together is cruelly poetic in many ways. It is racing distilled to its purest form.

At Seven Barrows, one stable star is redefining what is possible, while another, equally cherished, is lost before his peak. Henderson has trained many greats before. Might Bite, Shishkin, Jonbon, the list is long. Each brought their own moments of brilliance, each their own complications.

But Constitution Hill and Sir Gino felt like something more. A pairing that could define an era. Quite probably his two greatest horses since the imperious Sprintre Sacre.

Instead, they now define something more symbolic about sport itself.

.

Why we keep coming back

After New Zealand’s agonising loss in the 2019 Cricket World Cup final, Jimmy Neesham wrote: “Kids, don’t take up sport. Take up baking or something. Die at 60 really fat and happy.”

It was a joke. Mostly. Neesham still plays. Just as Henderson will keep training. Just as owners will keep buying. Just as we will all keep watching.

Racing, like all sport, offers no guarantees. Only the possibility of greatness, and the risk of losing it all.
