At Vimeiro is a compact and enthusiastic 4-year-old gelding, who has all the makings of a future Cartmel Racecourse specialist.
At Vimeiro is now in training with last season’s Cartmel Champion trainer, Ben Haslam, having been purchased by Highflyer Bloodstock at the Tattersalls February Sale 2025 with a view to making the transition to National Hunt Racing.
He cost 650,000gns as a yearling at the Tattersalls Book 1 Sales: the fourth-highest price by his sire in 2022. He has already shown a good level of form on the Flat, despite looking a longer term prospect on breeding. At three, he ran against subsequent Group and Listed winners, including 2024 Derby runner up, Ambiente Friendly. This earned him a peak BHA rating of 96.
He won comfortably on his only start to date as a four-year-old, when stepped up to the marathon trip of 2m½f, showing that he clearly relished the stamina test. Always prominent, he travelled strongly throughout and was the last horse to come off the bridle. He began to wander slightly when coming under pressure, suggesting that he still had plenty left in the tank. Click here to watch that race.
At Vimeiro is by Sea The Stars, who has a lifetime percentage of winners to runners of 68%(!) and has earned himself a stallion fee of €250,000. He is responsible for the likes of Baaeed, Crystal Ocean and Stradavarius to name only a few.
Amorella was herself a five-time winner, including at Group 2 level. She is by Nathaniel, a hugely successful sire who is best known for producing the star mare, Enable.
Ben is thrilled with the recent addition to his yard, informing us that At Vimeiro is "enthusiastic, he shows a bit of speed… and plenty of stamina as well, so he’s versatile”. He has also been “delighted” with what he has seen of his jumping so far and noted that “he’s taking to it really well”.
At Vimeiro is in full training and looks an especially exciting prospect to take novice hurdling this spring and summer.
Ben Haslam has trained from Castle Hill Stables in the picturesque village of Middleham since 2010.
Ben was successful in achieving a place on Sheikh Mohammed’s highly acclaimed Darley Flying Start scholarship. This took him around the world, including the Curragh, Kentucky, Sydney and Dubai, where he was taught by the very best in all fields of the industry.
Back in England, Ben spent time with Sir Michael Stoute and then returned home to work as Assistant Trainer to his father, Patrick, before taking over the reins at the young age of 25. He has sent out over 200 winners under both codes to date, including at Black Type level.
There are no other partners in this horse, so once 2500 shares are sold, 100% of the horse will be owned by shareholders.
Unlike other syndicates, Old Gold Racing does not charge owners VAT. This means that there is no need to reclaim VAT and that a share represents a greater proportion of the racehorse.
At the end of the syndicate term any unspent funds are returned to owners pro-rata. These funds can be withdrawn or used against the cost of renewing or purchasing a share.

At Vimeiro is by Sea The Stars and out of the Nathaniel mare, Amorella.
Sea The Stars won nine of his ten starts on the track, seven of which were at Group One level. Following a win in the G2 Beresford Stakes at two, he progressed to the highest level the following season, scoring in the 2000 Guineas, English and Irish Derby’s and Arc De Triumph. In doing so, he beat the likes of Mastercraftsman, Youmzain and Fame And Glory, who have all become successful in the breeding shed.
Retiring at the end of his three-year-old campaign, he has gone on to be one the world’s top stallions, siring the likes of Baaeed, Crystal Ocean and Stradavarius among several other Group One winners. However, he has found success at all levels, achieving a lifetime percentage of 68% winners to runners. This has earned him a stallion fee of €250,000.
Amorella was herself a five-time winner including at Group 2 level. She won the T. von Zastrow Stutenpries at four, fininging second in the G1 Preis von Europa on her next start. She earned a total of £105,075 during her career before being retired as a broodmare. She has been sent to some of the most fashionable stallions, including Sea The Stars, Kingman and Lope De Vega. She is also a half sister to multiple blacktype performers, including Accon who was placed in the German Derby and won a Group 2 before becoming a stallion.
She is by Nathaniel, who managed to score in the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Eclipse in a career that saw him win just under £1.5million. A hugely successful sire at stud, he is best known for producing the star mare, Enable, who was a 15 time winner including 11 races at Group One level and two Prix de l'Arc de Triomphes. As a damsire, he has produced the likes of Black Type performers Silver Knott and Dee Capo.
