Extragalactica is a good-looking colt with plenty of scope, suggesting there is more to come. He is in the right hands to fulfil his potential and should continue to develop. He looks an exciting prospect going forward.
William Haggas learned his trade under the guidance of John Winter and Sir Mark Prescott Bt before taking out his own training licence in 1987. He wasted little time making an impact, saddling his first winner, Tricky Note, on April 15 of that year. Operating from his long-established Somerville Lodge base in Newmarket, Haggas has built one of the most respected yards in British racing.
Over the years, he has enjoyed success at the highest level, recording multiple Group 1 victories, including seven Classic wins. His breakthrough Classic success came with Shaamit in the 1996 Derby, and he has since been responsible for a host of top-level performers such as Mukhadram, Rivet, Urban Fox, Sea Of Class, One Master, Addeybb, Alenquer, Sea La Rosa, Dubai Honour, Montassib and Economics. Among his most notable achievements is training Baaeed, Cartier Horse of the Year in 2022.
In 2013, Haggas was appointed to the roster of Royal trainers and enjoyed his first success in those colours when Purple Spectrum won at Windsor in May 2014. He is supported in all aspects of the operation by his wife, Maureen, daughter of legendary jockey Lester Piggott, and together they have formed a highly successful training partnership.
