Three-time champion jockey Oisin Murphy has relinquished his licence to focus on his rehabilitation.
The British Horseracing Authority has released a statement informing that Murphy breached coronavirus protocols in September 2020.
Murphy has also since returned positive tests for alcohol on the racecourse this year; at Chester in May and then at Newmarket in October.
The BHA has issued three alleged charges and a hearing due to take place in front of an independent disciplinary panel. This was arranged for December 10 but, after receiving submissions from Murphy's legal team over his wellbeing, the BHA has agreed to postpone the hearing for a short period of time.
Murphy said: ‘On returning from abroad last September in 2020, I failed to follow the Covid protocol set out by the BHA. In breaking these rules and attempting to mislead the BHA, I've let my governing body down, along with trainers, owners, staff, sponsors and family for which I wish to apologise.’
He added… ‘Whether I deserve it or not, many kind people have stood by me and I really appreciate their support. I'm deeply embarrassed and regret my actions.’
BHA director of integrity and regulation Tim Naylor said: 'In regulating the sport, we must always strike the balance between the importance of upholding the rules and being mindful of the well-being of those who we regulate. The welfare of our participants is an absolute priority.’
Qatar Racing, who retain Murphy, have issued their support for his decision and asked that he receives ‘space and time’.
A statement read… ‘Qatar Racing wholeheartedly supports Oisin's decision to temporarily relinquish his licence whilst he tackles his health issues.’
Murphy was crowned champion jockey for the third time on Qipco British Champions Day at Ascot in October. He and William Buick battled right to the end, with Murphy coming out on top by a mere 2 wins.
His 2021 victories include the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on Alcohol Free, with his latest top-level win coming in the Breeders' Cup Distaff on the Japanese mare Marche Lorraine.
Whilst All Weather racing is underway, turf racing has finished for the year making it the best season for Murphy to take time away.
We wish Oisin Murphy all the best in his recovery and look forward to seeing his return to the saddle.
