Harry Cobden's Ultimate Racehorse

Heart, legs, body, head and hind. Harry Cobden builds us his ultimate racehorse.

Head - Kauto Star

Hardly a surprise to see the five-time King George VI Chase winner here. He had an unbelievable turn of foot, as well as great grit and determination.

The Paul Nicholls trained gelding showed what a smart type he was in his versatility. He won at trips ranging from two miles to three miles and two furlongs. Kauto is arguably the jewel in Ditcheat's crown.

Heart - Native RiverNative River is a strong travelling and consistent nine-year-old that gives his all in every race.

After two victories in the Denman Chase (2017, 2018), the gelding hit the zenith of his career so far, beating Might Bite and Anibale Fly to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

As rumours circulate that he may head for the Grand National this year, the titter of excitement from his adoring fans is growing audible.

Body - Sprinter Sacre

Sprinter Sacre was written off by many following an injury that almost ended his career. He then went on in impressive style to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the bet365 Celebration Chase. The roar from the crowds was perfect proof that we all love a comeback story.

Nicky Henderson’s steeplechaser is often recalled as being the greatest two-miler to ever grace the turf. Sprinter Sacre is famous for his immense staying power and ability to run his opposition into submission by gradually increasing the speed of a race while outstaying his wilting competitors.

Legs – Cyrname

The third-highest Timeform rated jumper, Cyrname (174), is the first horse Mr Cobden mentioned that he has actually ridden. The eight-year-old gelding has an enormous stride and a proper engine. After a shake of the reigns he can bolt clear of the field effortlessly.

His unbelievably simple 17-length victory in the Betfair Ascot Chase cemented Cyrname as one of the UK’s best jumpers, and his follow-up victory in the 1965 Chase over Altior was just as impressive, especially given that his main rival was unbeaten in 19 and sent off 1/3 favourite.

Hind - Denman

Despite spending significant chunks of his career in the shadow of Kauto Star, Denman was an unbelievable horse. The Paul Nicholls trained gelding was a terrific stayer and always gave his all. Punters nicknamed him ‘The Engine’.

Denman had his time in the limelight in 2008 when he finally managed to overcome Kauto Star to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup, cruising clear to secure a seven-length victory.

He also won two Hennessy Gold Cups, now known as the Ladbrokes Trophy, off top-weight, showcasing class and willpower to win with ease on both occasions.
